First Job Seekers

Imagine going on a first date with someone who arrives half and hour late wearing torn jeans and a dirty T-shirt. What would your first impression be? Would you be likely to go on a second date with that person? Probably not. Now imagine going to a job interview dressed in old jeans, a un-pressed shirt and without your resume. What impression do you think you'd make on the prospective employer? Do you think the employer is likely to ask you back for a second interview? Exactly.

Employers and employment agencies are looking for candidates that make a positive impression because every aspect of business interaction has a perception component. Arriving on time, professionally dressed, with an error-free resume will demonstrate that you understand this essential business fact.

A polished, conservative, well-groomed appearance is always appropriate for an interview. Even if you only want to work in a casual setting, attention to your appearance will indicate more than just your good taste in clothes. It will show a respect for your skills and experience, as well as a respect for the interviewer. In other words, it will demonstrate good business sense! And if you really want to be remembered after the interview, send a thank you note to the interviewer!

Also be aware that the impression you make extends beyond your personal appearance to things like your resume. If you have a resume filled with grammatical errors and on a dirty, folded piece of paper, the employer will see a lack of attention to detail and assume lack of interest in the position. A resume must speak clearly of your value as a potential employee. An eye appealing, error-free, logically displayed resume always works to your advantage. Employers simply eliminate resumes that are difficult to read, grammatically incorrect or filled with spelling errors.

Remember that employers and employment agencies make decisions about hiring (or not hiring) candidates based on the impression the candidate makes. To command the attention and respect you deserve, it will work to your advantage to manage the way you will be perceived.
